Ministry Specifics

Where: I’ll be serving in Nairobi, Kenya, which is the capitol city of Kenya. In Nairobi, there is a slum called Mathare Valley. Mathare is home to nearly one million people in a square mile of land. The people of Mathare make, on average, $1-$2 per day. In 2000, local Kenyans, Wallace and Mary Kamau, chose to follow God’s call on their lives and open a one-room school house with 50 children from the streets of Mathare. God has continuously provided for their ministry. Currently, their organization, Missions of Hope International, operates 16 schools with nearly 13,000 children. It’s amazing what God will choose to do with your obedience. In 2004, an American organization, Christian Missionary Fellowship International, partnered with MOHI in what is now called the Hope Partnership. Because the Kamau’s obeyed, 13,000 children have hope for their future. In addition to education, Missions of Hope International (MOHI) offers skills training for community members to learn trades, micro-finance for these community members to begin their own businesses, social workers to aid in the needs of the children, spiritual development officers to evangelize and connect believers to non-believers, and Community Health Evangelism (CHE). CHE is a program that offers training in hygiene, community health, disease control, and what it means to be a follower of Christ. CHE workers form MOHI seek out community members that they feel desire change to come to Mathare. They then equip these selected members to go out and train others in Mathare in hopes to cultivate a community that truly cares for one another. In addition to these, MOHI also has a water bottling plant and a fully-functioning farm with pigs, fish, goats, chickens, green houses, aquaponics, and crops. MOHI’s Kingdom impact is truly monumental. I am always amazed by their intentionality to empower the people of Mathare to be the solution to their problems, while never forgetting that what we truly need comes only from God.

What: During my time in Kenya, I’ll be working as a REVEAL missionary, through Christian Missionary Fellowship, with MOHI in their child sponsorship and education departments. In child sponsorship, I will be working alongside another missionary to perform the needed duties to ensure the child sponsorship of the 13,000 children runs smoothly. I will also be providing various teacher trainings as well as helping to oversee the curriculum used to ensure academic standards are being met.

When: I will leave in January of 2016 and stay for at least a year.
